Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Research studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other organizations have consistently linked adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to negative health and social outcomes in adulthood, including early death. These stressful and traumatic events are usefully grouped into three categories: abuse (e.g., emotional, physical, or sexual), neglect (emotional or physical), and household challenges (e.g., substance abuse, mental illness, separation/divorce, or incarcerated household member). Efforts aimed at preventing these experiences and mitigating their impact are a crucial agenda for affected communities and those who work with them.
